With the emergence of Google Voice and SkyDeck, it is now easier than ever to backup your text messages. SMSSyncUp takes a step further, providing the option to upload your text messages to your Gmail account.

1. Install the application
2. Choose your Gmail Account.
3. Open the application, and fill the Send To: with the gmail id to which you want to backup sms.
4. Go to Menu “Login”(it is not an actual login, you need to configure your Gmail account for it).
5. Login should enable the SMS folders dropdown with all your SMS folders.
6. Select the folder to backup.
7. Go to Menu “Sync SMS Folder”. This should start the message conversion to mail format. Progress will be displayed.
8. On completion it will prompt and then ask you if you want to sync
9. Syncing would send Emails with Subject IMAPSMS| :Sender and the body will contain Message and time, the subject should help you to create proper rules in your gmail account.

Some users of Samsung Omnia or Omnia II have complaint about a recurring theme where items from their computer appear on their mobile device without prior settings within the Windows Mobile Device Center. Here is an example:

It turns out, for users who have either used or setup the Microsoft My Phone service previously may have set the sync option to automatic – in which case, changes made in Mobile Device Center will not affect the synced items.

Have you tried making notes on your Windows Mobile? It’s easy. Just pull up the Notes application and you have the option of either enter in text or use handwriting to jot down your thoughts and ideas. It’s great and all, but how do you retrieve those notes onto your PC?

Since the Notes is an ActiveSync content, you can use sync the notes by simply choosing the item using either ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center (depending on your Windows version).

Once synced, you can get to the note through Microsoft Outlook. Open up Outlook and you have a few alternative to get to Notes:

• Ctrl+5 to launch Notes section
• On the tool bar, goto Go > Notes
• At the bottom of the Navigation Panel you can see a few icons, one of them will be Notes (mouse-over to find it)

Now you can access the notes and make changes to it. The changes will be reflected on your Windows Mobile when synced.

ActiveSync is a great way to connect your Windows Mobile with your Windows applications such as the Microsoft Outlook. This is great and all, but what if you are using Mozilla products such as the Thunderbird, Firefox or Sunbird amongst some other applications. Getting them to work with ActiveSync could be tricky, and that’s where FinchSync comes in.

To get the FinchSync to work you will need both the server and client application. The PC (server) application and is available for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The client application will run on all Pocket PCs with .NET installed without the need of ActiveSync, instead you will need to establish connection through TCP/IP.

In terms of multiple source, FinchSync answered it here:

FinchSync is designed to manage contacts, appointments and tasks from different sources and keeps them separated. This means, that private items synchronized at home will not be mixed up with items synchronized in your office.

FinchSync has a user-management. Different users may sync with different sources on your PC. Users may be restricted to read-only access. For example, a user may be allowed to sync with a companies’ address book, but not to upload changes.

This is good news for Mozilla users to sync up your personal information. Definitely recommended application to give it a try.

As Fennec is coming along for its mobile debut, one of the pet projects by Mozilla Lab may be used to sync up bookmarks on Firefox browsers. This is great news for users contemplating to use Fennec.

Unlike Internet Explorer’s Favorites, which can be synced automatically, Fennec does not have that feature. We are not very familiar with the project Weave, but with a look at some of the feature on its latest release, we can expect good things from Mozilla.

• Support for changing passwords and passphrases
• Support for Fennec on Windows Mobile and Firefox on x86 OpenSolaris

If you’re syncing your Outlook contacts to your mobile device, won’t you like to match the names with their photos? Rather than having to locate and assign each of your 250 contacts’ personal pictures, why not try OutSync to synchronize their Facebook’s profile pictures automatically?

Note: The names of the contact on both Outlook and Facebook needs to be matched up before it can be automatically assigned.

With OutSync’s function to sync photos with matching contacts, you the Outlook user, will have most if not all of your Outlook contacts profiled. Great, what now? Since this is actually a desktop application, it would not be surprising to receive comments regarding its relevance to your mobile device. Ah-ha, we’re here to answer just that.

1. First and foremost, install and run the OutSync program.
2. Launch it and you will be asked for your Facebook’s login credential, and depending on your level of trust, this may be your final step.
3. Okay, once logged in, OutSync will scan through your contacts in Facebook and Outlook to find matching pairs.
4. Once found, the list on the left-side will be the ones ready to be synced.
5. Lastly, if you already have your Outlook setup within your ActiveSync, simply plug in the ActiveSync cable, sit back and let ActiveSync do the rest.

To test it out, just go to the contacts whose names are listed in #4 (the matching ones) and ta-da, their Facebook’s profile picture will be there for your convenience.

You can certainly go fanatic and update all of your Outlook contacts to match with your Facebook ones. Oh, I’ve got only 600 more to go.

One of the most powerful features on the Windows Mobile is synchronizing information between your PC and device.

To have all of your information synced up with one another will not only provide you with the most updated list of items including contact information, appointments, emails is not only convenient but comforting. Days where you need to update multiple devices and lives in the constant worry of missing something has past. Now, you can not only setup default synchronization, but also synchronize with Exchange server and Google.

Let’s begin by listing the various topic we’re going to cover today:

1. Perform Basic Synchronization of Information

If you’re using Windows Vista or 7, the Mobile Device Center will be pre-installed and all you need to do is plug in the cable. But if you’re using Windows XP, you will need to install the latest ActiveSync software, available here. Below are the screenshots for both cases:

Once the synchronization is completed, the phone should stay connected to the computer. If any change is made, Microsoft ActiveSync will automatically begins synchronization.

To manually start synchronization, press the Sync soft key in Microsoft ActiveSync on your phone. You can open the phone’s file directory by clicking Explore from the Microsoft ActiveSync window. You can then copy files quickly and easily from the phone to the computer, or vice versa.

2. Exchange Server Connection and Configuration

1. In ActiveSync® on your phone, press the Menu soft key and select Add Server Source.
2. Enter your email address (corresponding to the Exchange Server ex. Exchange.careace.net ) in the Email address: field.
3. Select the Attempt to detect Exchange Server settings automatically field and press the key to make a checkmark. Press the Next soft key.
4. Enter the Server address (ex. exchange.careace.net ) and select This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection to use a SSL protocol for server access if you need(In my case, it caused a problem when sent out email so that I don’t select it.)
5. Press the Next soft key.
6. Enter your Microsoft Exchange User name, Password, and Domain(usually, careace.net). To save the password for subsequent accesses, select Save password.
7. Press the Next soft key.
8. Select data types to be synchronized. Press the Menu soft key to access the following options: Advanced: You can set how to handle a data conflict between your device and computer, and set an event logging type. Back: You can return to the previous step.
   • Settings: You can set the options for handle a data for each data type.
   • Advanced: You can set how to handle a data conflict between your device and computer, and set an event logging type.
   • Back: You can return to the previous step.
9. Press the Finish soft key when you are finished.

With all sorts of information now able to be synchronized, you don’t have to worry about the list of item that is not updated!

Since it was made known to the market, Microsoft MyPhone has been preparing itself for the showcasing of its cloud-ward approach. Previously a invitation only, MyPhone, Microsoft’s data synchronization service,  can now be accessed by anyone with a Windows Live ID. So what can it be used for?

Many things, with its core function as a data synchronizing service, so you may not only backup but get access to the information on your mobile device anywhere you go. Here are a list of items that you may sync and share from your device:

There are some restrictions to the type of item you may synchronize per situation as listed here. And it is important to note that synchronization are not performed automatically per change, but manually according to preset settings.

While iPhone has MobileMe, and the rest of the technology world going for cloud, we are reminded of an article from Wired Magazine’s January 09 issue that discusses the cloud-based goal that Microsoft is trying to strive towards. If you’re using a Windows Mobile device, it should be rather logical to sign up for a service provided by Windows.

If you are a Facebook user, you will often find yourself identifying your friends by looking at their Facebook’s profile pictures. How neat will it be if you can use these profile pictures as the contact pictures on your mobile device? It would be very neat. But downloading, syncing and assigning can be a very heavy duty job. Hence we seek out BookSync by Mike Appleton, an application that downloads Facebook profile pictures and assigning them to your contacts (part-automatic).

Use Microsoft Tag for Mobile Download (?)

Setup your Windows Mobile (WM) contacts, tasks and appointment with your Google Account using Google Sync through ActiveSync. That’s a mouthful of syncs, but that is one thing you can do if you are an owner of a WM device who uses Google alot.

Google has provided a well sorted resource to get you started. Before we do anything, it is important that you backup your data to prevent any accidental data loss.

Okay, are you ready? Here we go.

Initial Setup

1. Open up ActiveSync on your WM device
2. Click on Menu then Configure Server
3. Enter m.google.com as the server address
4. Make sure the SSL option is checked

Sign into your Google Account

1. Click Next to get to the screen for User Information
2. Enter your User name and Password (be sure to use username@gmail.com)
3. Leave the Domain field empty, or enter google if necessary
4. Click Next
5. Check only Contacts and Calender for the data that you want to synchronize
6. Click Finish to exit the setup
7. You will be brought back to the ActiveSync’s main page, click Sync to start synchronize.

You’re all set to go! It’s fairly easy to setup and now you can sync up your Google tasks, calendar events and contacts with your Windows Mobile device. It’s a great way to keep them both updated on what’s going on in your life!

Everyone is getting busier, there is always some errand that you need to run, tasks to finish and appointments to make. It would be great if all of these can come together for easier and better organization. The goal is not to have individual items to fulfill their needs, but to have them connected together. SmartOrganizer as developed through the Dev2Help project aims to accomplish just that.

With SmartOrganizer, you are able to link a bunch of the items you have inputted into the organizer. For example, after inputting an recurring task in your task list, you can then head over to the Daily Scheduler and choose the option to “Load From Task List”. The same applies to the relations with shopping list, food inventory, recipe box and meal planner. It is as if the application is a giant mind-map that intersects with one another. Cool stuff.

Installation

To install, simply load up the cab file in the File Explorer and install it anywhere.

Note: This application requires the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 to run.

Design

The application is said to be developed for screens with 240×320 screen resolution but having tested it on the Omnia (400×240), Blackjack + (320×240) and Epix (320×320), they all should work fine with the application.

Now the graphics are a little old school, in the sense of Office ‘95 clip-art old-school. While that is fine, the one thing that bothers me is the lack of feedback when you have selected one of the items. You do still get there, but without knowing if you did the right thing. A simple on-click event highlight would suffice.

Aside from that, the design is quite basic with the 3×3 grid layout for the 9 items within the application. Most of them have distinguishable designs, although all of them are still Windows default layout.

While some of the items shares similar attributes in design, the 4 more discrete designs includes the Task List, Daily Scheduler, Meal Planner and the Pocket Timer.

It can be assumed that the application is leaning more towards a working application rather than a fancy looking program. However, with the developers looking to update it in the near future, we may yet expect some changes in this aspect of the application

Usability

Synchronization is the main topic in this application, with the ability to link up various items just like you would want them to be in real-life. For example, in the real world, you will be basing the ingredients for your dinner on what you have in your food inventory. That’s the idea behind the function of the application and its a brilliant idea.

You can add/remove items easily as well as importing them from other lists. To utilize them, simply use the Menu bar on the bottom.

Features

Pros

• All-in-one: stop jumping around your program list to finish all the tasks, they are all in one spot now.
• Synchronization: it could be a task or a meal planner. It’s wonderful to know what you have in your Food Inventory, then look into your Recipe Box before planning your dinner.
• Packing List: Having a check-list when traveling can help a great deal in making sure you are not missing anything

Cons

• Design: The rather primitive design maybe misleading to the functionality of the application
• Pre-installed Recipe Box: This is sometimes a good to have, otherwise having to input everything in manual can be a daunting task

Should I get it?

SmartOrganizer is actually a very smart organizer, while there might be some areas that’s lacking, the core function is very well developed. If you have a busy schedule, or you buys your own grocery, or you travel, this freeware is a great way to keep everything tied up. Yes, you should get it.
