While virus on the PC are being seen as a commonality now, Windows Mobile is not yet plagued with the same degree of malicious wares that bogs down devices or cost the user a fortune. That is perhaps, until now.

Problem?

The problem? Users are discovering that their phones are dialing out international calls spontaneously without their permission.

In most cases, the users’ carriers prevent the calls from being made (i.e. AT&T normally blocks outgoing international calls unless it’s permitted by the user), but in the rare scenarios where those calls can be made, it will definitely rack up a hefty bill for the user.

Image: 1800pocketpc

Cause?

The guys over at XDA-Developers, where the problem first surfaced seems to have narrowed the culprit down to an application called “3D Anti-Terrorist“. The application appears to install a trojan file alongside the game.

If you suspect to have fall victim to the issue, try to look through your call history and check if any unplanned international calls have been made.

Solution?

There are now a variety of ways you can try to fix the virus, ranging from removing specific files to installing mobile virus scan software, to hard resetting your device. If you don’t have too much data on your phone, hard reset is probably the best option.

With Windows Mobile’s applications scattered all over the web (thanks to Marketplace’s scarce supply of apps), users often times has to sweep and scout for fun and entertaining application. This comes with a price – not knowing what you have installed until it’s too late.

Hopefully it would be an issue addressed in the upcoming Marketplace for Windows Phone 7.

Are you also experiencing this issue? Share you thoughts with us.

ZLaunchy utilizes the dialer phone-pad to search through programs on your Windows Mobile devices. I’m calling it a gem in my application collection. For users who have used Quicksilver or Launchy on the desktop, this is a similar application aside from the phonepad and that its on the mobile device.

To get started, simply install and launch the application. Enter any series of alphabets by tapping on the relevant numbers to start searching through the application. The results loads without much delay at all. The developer credit that to the lack of application icons.

Give it a try and test it out yourself.
