Samsung Spica has been out and about for just over a month and is already receiving royal treatment – an upgrade to Android 2.1.

Looking fairly similar to the Samsung Galaxy (i7500), the Samsung Spica (i5700) is well equipped with Google applications alongside an 800 MHz processor amongst other features.

Samsung is the leading mobile manufacturer that includes AMOLED display on the mobile devices. And this year, a new term has been penned called the Super AMOLED.

But what is Super AMOLED and what is so super about it?

Comparing that to the regular OLED, the Super AMOLED’s the thin display already has touch sensors integrated, the colors are relatively more vivid (thanks to the thinner layer), the viewing angle is also improved.

Evernote, the free multiplatform application that allows people to remember everything that matters to them, announced today that Evernote for Android will be pre-installed on selected Samsung Android mobile devices. In the U.S., the Evernote application was included as part of a recent software update to the Samsung Behold® II.

Evernote has a growing reputation as a highly-capable multimedia note-taking tool where user can sync up both mobile and web application. This addition will surely take the free app to a whole new level.

Alaska Airlines is the latest airline to launch its own native mobile application across multiple platforms. The purpose of the mobile application is to provide services such as access to flight status information, flight schedules, Web check-in, flight alerts, etc.

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air today announced the launch of three mobile applications designed for iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users. The free applications are available for download at www.alaskaair.com/mobile. Unlike the Web-optimized mobile.alaskaair.com site, the applications are custom built for each device and can be downloaded directly to the smartphone.

This move sees the continual addition of more airlines and travel agency that have launched its own mobile application. Smartphone users will be able to conveniently access flight information whenever needed. It’s travel made easy.

At this week’s Game Developers Conference 2010, Microsoft unveiled XNA Game Studio 4.0, a tool to aid developers in developing high-quality games with Xbox LIVE features.

This goes hand-in-hand with Windows Phone 7’s ambitious goal of combining everything from music, to social network to gaming. Quoting a Microsoft representative:

they’ll be able to find a variety of games on Windows Phone 7 Series when it launches, from casual 2-D games to 3-D games with high quality graphics and for the first time, games with Xbox LIVE features.

The Xbox feature is not just for profile browsing. You may now play and unlock achievements remotely, without having to sit indoor all day long.

AT&T has recently introduced it’s first Android-powered Motorola Backflip. With it’s unique design and social network centric theme (through Motorola Blur technology), it’s an interesting approach to today’s smartphone.

We are interested in how the Samsung Behold II by T-Mobile, Samsung’s first Android-powered phone stands up to the Backflip. Both devices are currently running on Android 1.5.

Remember Swype that was first spotted on the Samsung Omnia II? It looks like the finger-based input method is coming to Android, almost.

Swype has announced its initial beta release where users can register to be a tester. And with support for HVGA and WVGA, most of the Android devices should be covered in terms of compatibility.

Here are some of the details regarding the Swype’s Android Beta:

• Initially we will have a limited number of participants – we’ll expand it soon
• In English and Spanish – more languages to come
• Limited Features – some key features of Swype require OEM integration
• HVGA and WVGA Resolutions – don’t worry we’ll detect this automatically

Windows Phone 7 has been grabbing headlines since it was first announced and demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress 2010. Windows Mobile 6.5, while just a interim mobile platform has been grabbing market shares in Latin America.

Despite the crowded news updates of a failing mobile platform, Windows Mobile 6.5 remains a dominant force in Brazil (26%) and Mexico (24%) – the two largest markets in Latin America.

This is according to BNAmericas’ interview with Doug Smith, Microsoft’s Latin America Director of Mobile Communications. Here’s the part of interview that addressed this statistics:

BNamericas: What about numbers in terms of sales in the region?

Smith: It’s still a little early to talk numbers, we just announced in December. It’d be better to look in about six months to see how we’re doing.

What I can tell you, referring back to IDC data, is that we continue to grow our market share presence in Latin America. IDC saw two [companies] in the smartphone market grow in the past 12 months, and that was Microsoft and Blackberry. We continue to feel good about our sales and we’re transitioning to 6.5 with manufacturers in a handful of countries. We have to continue with that transition. 6.5 will be the dominant platform for us as we conclude 2010, when we launch 7.

Last quarter, IDC had us at a 26% share in Brazil and 24% in Mexico – the two largest markets in Latin America.

This is good news for Windows Phone who, despite the preparation for Windows Phone 7, is not going to abolish support for previous platforms including Windows Mobile 6.5. And a strong market is always appreciated.
