Windows Marketplace, the hugely anticipated application store by Windows that was set to launch on October 6th on Windows Mobile 6.5 has been successfully ported to Windows Mobile 6.1. While the resolution may not have been optimized for all devices, the functions worked just fine. We’ve tested it on the Samsung Omnia in this article.

User Interface in Marketplace

Once the Windows Marketplace is installed and loaded, you are taken to the main menu where you have Showcase, Most popular, What’s new, Categories and My applications. And on the top bar, right below the search bar is some of the top downloads, which on our screen is Facebook, PAC-Man, WunderRadio and MobileManager (for Netflix).

Navigation in Marketplace

It’s fairly easy to navigate your way around the Marketplace. Browsing for free apps? Choose View on the top-right hand and choose Free. Looking for application of a certain genre? Head back to the main menu and choose Categories.

To keep track of the applications you have installed, go to My applications, where you will have 4 options available to you:

  • Updates: Keep track of any updates that is available for your applications
  • Ready to install: If you are installing more than one application, this is a form of Queue for the ones that are pending installation
  • Rate an app: This option allows you to rate the applications you have installed through the Marketplace
  • Remove an app: This is an unique feature whereby you can uninstall apps without using the Remove Programs setting

How To Install Apps in Marketplace?

To install any of the application, simply click on the title and it will take you to the individual product page. The page consists of the install button and information such as description, Features, Application Requirements, Release information, reviews and screenshots. Clicking on the install button will initiate the installation.

The interesting thing about Marketplace is that the application is directly installed from within the Marketplace without going to File Explorer or the traditional installation process (screenshot).

Where can I find Marketplace for Windows Mobile 6.1?

When it comes to development, no other forum is as prominent as the XDA Developers. On many occasions, the forum has stood out as the pioneer in developing and porting. We’re grateful for the developer that made Windows Marketplace for Windows Mobile 6.1 possible.

Feel free to check out the discussion thread (page 55 / post #549) or download the .zip file attached (may require login/registration to xda-developers).
