How to Add Widgets to Samsung Omnia

Adding widgets to Samsung Omnia seems like something easy and do-able but has not yet been done by many people. shock8311 from Samsung-Omnia.org has like many of us spent hours in trying to figure out which directory to place the .wgt files to make it work. However, the solution as he have discovered, is seemingly a very simple solution that takes just 3 steps.

What do I need?

Before we begin, here are some of the things that you need to make it work:

  1. Samsung Omnia (i900 or i910)
  2. Latest Update: Check here for Omnia update if you haven’t already done so
  3. MyMobiler: To establish connection between device and desktop (download here)

How do we do this?

Instead of getting all worked up with coding and messing with directory placing, all you need to do is download, rename and move/copy.

  1. Download: Look for widgets on the internet that has .wgt extension or go to Opera Widgets. Click Launch on any desktop browsers other than Opera. And choose Download the widget anyway
  2. Rename*: The downloaded file should have the name of download. You will need to rename it with an extension of .wgt. For example: twitter.wgt. The filename doesn’t matter, just remember you will need to include the extension.
  3. Move/Copy: Next you will need to launch MyMobiler. After it has connected to the device (indicated by showing your device screen on your desktop). With Samsung Widget as your Today screen, simply move the .wgt file onto the MyMobiler screen to commence installation.

And you’re done! With the installation is done, you will be shown the Success Install Widget message. Scroll down in the widget panel and look for the widget you have just installed.

*(from Rename above)You will need to change some settings to see the extension of files. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > Views tab and uncheck the box that says “Hide extensions for known file types“. Now you can rename the download file to .wgt extension along with a choiced filename.

Screenshots Guide: Visual Aid

We can always do with some visual aid when it comes to a how-to guide. Here are some screenshots of the installation process. If it is still not apparent to you, please feel free to contact us, we will be glad to help. :)

Video Guide: Visual Aid #2!

Hopefully these couple of minutes can give you a better idea on installing widgets to your Samsung Omnia.

As you can see from the screenshot, we have a collection of files with the .wgt extension (widgets). With the Samsung Widget as the today screen, dragging the file onto the MyMobiler screen will commence the installation. Once installed, it will show up on the list and can be launched from the panel.

One disadvantage of this is the sizing of these widgets, which was not optimized for the Samsung Omnia. There are however, definitely ways around it or other widgets that you can look for to fit better on your Samsung Omnia. Kudos to shock8311 for making this easier for us.

Did it work for you and your Omnia? Have a question? Feel free to contact us.

It’s strange. I did have an experience where the item I installed didn’t show up. It could just be that the specific .wgt file is not compatible because the (screen) size is too small, etc.

did this a while ago tho the facebook widget from opera failed to connect. however i got a premiership widget,tictac toe widget, bbc widget(more like a launcher of the website) and another facebook which i got by modifying the xml and html in the bbc widget.its also just a launcher. its fun tho. i wish someone could find where the widgets that launch programs are so we can make a launcher for any program straight from the today screen. for example the phonebook widget launches the phonebook. calender widget launches the calender.

So how did you do it, I need explicit steps and just download, rename and move/copy. I really want to put my skyfire on my today screen and a few other widgets.

thanks

The reason that I didn’t show it is because my phone doesn’t have data plan and it seems like (when I tried earlier) the Facebook widget require that to run. I will give it a try today w/ data plan.

I have done it and still nothing. It created a widget folder in my device directory but nothing on the widget panel or settings. Do these programs have to be installed on the device or storage card or is there something I’m missing. I did everything just has you requested.

all of this widgets business is a lie – it does not work as outlined on http://www.careace.net/2009/09/14/how-to-add-widgets-to-samsung-omnia/\

Is there anybody here who can help the folks and tell the truth!

@Alexl, not exactly a lie. Opera widget is originally designated for the Opera Browser that’s why sometimes they do not work on the Omnia widget. But as you can see, some works and some don’t. We will try to provide you guys with a source that is more Samsung Omnia centric.

I solved the problem
from the mobiler menu open File\open setting
a text file will be opened
scroll to the “Drag & Drop Target Folder” section and add the word “,WGTFILE” to the end of the raw:
DropFileType=CabFile,ImageFile,MusicFile

then add the following text to the end of the section

WGTFILE=wgt
WGTFILE_DropFolder=windows

i hope you catch it

jt. I saw the same thing. I chose get the files and was able to download the widget to a folder on my computer. But, I am still unable to get the widget to load on my phone via mymobiler. It will give me a plus box so it appears that I can add it to the mymobiler screen on my computer but nothing ever installs on the phone. I have added the code given by m.atassi but still nothing. Anyone else have any ideas?
