Reassign Soft Keys on the Today Screen

For most Windows Mobile users, the Today screen is their lifeline to their daily PDA needs. For me, I have the date, time, applications (using Easy Today Launcher), messages, Wireless, Calendar and device lock all in one screen (screenshot). While there is settings available to assign actions to hardware buttons, reassigning the two soft keys is not easy.

Objective

Reassigning the 2 soft keys on the Today Screen

Applicable Device(s)

Samsung Omnia and Samsung Epix

What you need

Registry editor (i.e. PHM Editor)

Registry Address

Feel free to add them if these registry keys are not available. In our scenario, we had to add the 112 key into the registry as well as the value names that follows.

  • Left: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\112
  • Right: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today\Keys\113

Value Name(s)

Feel free to add them if these value names are not available.

  • Default
  • Open

Value Data

  • Default: The name of the button (i.e. CareAce)
  • Open: The path of the application when the button is clicked (i.e. \Program Files\CareAce\CareAce.exe)

Screenshot

The first screenshot shows the registry address. The second one shows the reassigned soft keys.

If the effect doesn’t take place right way, give it a light nudge by soft-reseting the device and it should work. Feel free to leave comments of your experience.
