Samsung Epix users have been brewing storms and for most part, rightly so. The Samsung Epix made available through AT&T has been problematic for users rooting for Windows Mobile that sports a QWERTY keyboard. As some of the unlucky Epix user might tell you, the entire SLOG DUMP was a mess by itself which the ID1 update didn’t quite fixed.

My Samsung Epix is a resource site designated for Samsung Epix. It had recently picked up an user input, detailing his experience with the device. Skipping through his experience with the SLOG DUMP error, Jason was not impressed by the footprints left behind by the ID1 update. Similar to our review of the update, drained battery and GPS issue are the big after effect following the update.
Battery would drain like crazy after using GPS, unless I did a soft rest (damned if I did, damned if I didn’t!)
After contacting AT&T and 6 refurbished Samsung Epix later, a list of learnt points was summarized. These includes the presence of existing problems on all the devices as well as some informational advice on how to trade out your buggy Samsung Epix.
This is a considerably comprehensive user’s experience walk-through detailing the problem and the solution. Here is his final advice for Samsung Epix user having similar issue as him:
…hopefully current Epix owners can use my experience to swap out their faulty post-ID1 Epix for one with a snappier UI or GPS, or another phone entirely.

I was lucky, I only had to deal with three Epix’s before AT&T swapped phones with me. They gave me an HTC Fuze (refurb), and honestly, it sits in my desk. I converted to an iPhone 3G that I bought from a coworker.
The whole debacle with the Epix is ridiculous. It truly shows, at least in my eyes, where the customers rank for both AT&T and Samsung. I’ll blame Samsung even more though since they are the manufacturers of it. It’s like they didn’t bother to quality test it or something.
I miss the phone, I really do. The form factor was exactly what I was looking for, despite minor annoyances (the proprietary connector, it’s a gripe I have with the iPhone too). It’s just a shame that they couldn’t get it right.
I had my epix replaced before because my keypads won’t work. maybe a hardware issue. after it was replace, i never experienced any problem with it. maybe not all are experiencing issues with the samsung epix.
Yes, we have some Epix here that worked fine through all the commotion as well.
My Epix worked just fine until the ID1 update. Now the GPS is more or less worthless.
@J.D, have you try to contact AT&T (or your carrier) about the issue. I think at this stage, when it comes to Epix, the CS rep should be well trained on how to provide good service to keep their customers.
I’ve had my Epix since Feb. It’s been a great phone.
Over five months, I had two “slog dumps.” Those were the ONLY time it froze, and this phone had fewer freezes than any other PDA I’ve owned.
I installed the update. Now the GPS says the signal is weak and can’t find satellites. But if I use Google Maps or Bing, without checking the GPS function, it finds me just fine, and quickly. It just seems to me to be finding the location within 30 feet, instead of within 5 feet. I don’t use GPS much, but it still gets directions, traffic reports, etc, just fine. If I were doing geocaching or something, I’d probably be handicapped.
The Epix is the best smartphone I’ve owned. The Fuze is junky, and has its share of software bugs. The performance of the Epix is comparable to the Blackberry Bold (the Bold has better screen resolution, but no touchscreen).
I sympathize with the users who have suffered with a severe slog dump problem, or gotten the runaround from ATT. But if my GPS “problem” is the same as other users’ (and I think it is – it won’t find satellites when you turn on GPS in Google Maps, but still locates well enough and immediately to find directions, etc), I fail to see a catastrophic gripe. I do think Samsung should fix the GPS, but I can’t believe that many people were really buying this phone to use pinpoint GPS applications.
Woah, one of the first positive view. It’s good to hear. Thanks for sharing.
I think maybe some people don’t know that google maps pinpoints your location without GPS, by triangulating between cell phone towers. Some people may think they need GPS, when they probably really don’t.
I get slog dump errors maybe once a month, and after reading about all the problems I havent “upgraded” to ID1 and I love my epix. I definitely feel for you guys that are having problems with your epix because it could be such a great phone if it werent for a few minor issues. I had respect for samsung before all this but that is all pretty much lost despite my good fortune. And at&t is going to be in serious trouble once apple moves to a different carrier because they have been treating their customers like crap and about 75% of at&t users I know use iphones (I do not personally support apple but their product is much more polished although it still has plenty of issues).
http://www.mysamsungepix.com confirms that the Epix will get the 6.5 upgrade and (in the thread discussing the upgrade), provides a gps fix that worked for me.
