If your Exchange server requires secure communication, you need to install a certification provided by your company or organization. Sometimes it can be a hassle to install it onto your device. Here are the step-by-step instruction that may be helpful for you. These covers three components: export the certificate, move the certificate and lastly install the certificate.

Note: This may or may not apply to your company or organization, depending on the communication’s security requirement.

Export Root and Intermediate Certificate

  1. Open Internet Explorer and enter the mail server address for outlook web access. For example: (https://mail.yourcompany.com)
  2. Double Click on the SSL secured icon located on the bottom right of your browser
  3. Click Certification Path tab which will include the Root and Intermediate certificate for the mail server.
  4. Select Copy to File which will launch the Export Certificate Wizard
  5. Click Next and select DER encoded binary X.509 (.CER) format
  6. Click Browse and save the file to your desktop
  7. With the Root Certificate Authority exported we need to also export the Intermediate Certificate
  8. Return to Step 2, Certification Path, highlight Intermediate Certificate and select view details
  9. Click Details tab, select Copy to File and repeat from Step 4
  10. Be sure to select DER encoded binary is file format

If ActiveSync is not installed on the PC, use the Getting Started CD that came with your Windows Mobile Device or download the most current version directly from Microsoft.

Note: The instructions below are for a Windows Mobile Device which already has an established partnership with the PC. If you have not yet set up a partnership between the PC and the Windows Mobile Device, please do so before continuing the instructions below.

Move Certificate into Mobile Device

Note: Make sure “Files” is selected as one of the synchronization options with ActiveSync.
  5. Synchronize the files from the PC to the Windows Mobile Device
