[Beginner] Class 05: Applications on Samsung Jack

This is lesson #4 in the ongoing series of CareAce.net’s Beginner’s Guide with a focus on the Samsung Jack. Please check back for more lessons as we move from basic to more advanced materials.

We’re nearing the end of the Beginner’s Guide here, and now we’re going to take a look at some of the standard applications that you will find and more importantly, use on your Samsung Jack. These are some of the core components that differentiates a Windows Mobile from other devices.

Let’s get started! Today, we’ll be going through the applications below in detail:

  1. Alarm Clock
  2. Connecting to a Website
  3. Using the Favorites list
  4. Instant Messaging
  5. Office Mobile
  6. Taking Pictures
  7. File Explorer
  8. Mobile Banking
  9. MobiTV
  10. RSS Reader
  11. Sped Dial
  12. Internet Sharing

That’s quite a list and should have everything you need to survive in the information age. Let’s now take a look at each one of them.

01. Alarm


Alarm is something essential to almost everyone. As much as you like your new thousand-dollar bed, you will still need to wake up at some point. Using the alarm will certain always beat being waken up by your mother, especially when that alarm is your favorite music. You may also use the alarms to remind you of an upcoming appointment.

Setting an Alarm

Here are the steps to setting up an alarm:

  1. On the Home Screen, go to Start > More > Organizer > Alarms
  2. On the Alarm screen, select Wake up alarm
  3. Check the box, enter the time for the wake-up alarm to be sound. You may also select the days when you want the wake-up alarm to be repeated.
  4. Use the navigation key on the D-Pad to move through each field. You can set the wake-up alarm at 3 different times.
  5. Now select the melody for the alarm in the Tone field.
  6. Select a time interval for the snooze in the Snooze field.
  7. Press Done when you’re finished.

Stopping an Alarm

Once you’ve been alarmed, so to speak, you will want to turn it off. Here’s how:

  • Snooze: The alarm will ring again after the previously specified snooze interval
  • Dismiss: This will stop the alarm from ringing

02. Connecting to a Website


Web browsing is not just a lesiure activity, it has grown to become a part of our daily lives. Samsung Jack let’s you start browsing easily.

  1. To connect and start browsing, you may:
    • Press Menu and select Address Bar to enter the URL you want to visit
    • Scroll to the page you want to view from the Favorites list (this may be synced with your desktop Favorites)
  2. Press Go on the browser to open the web pages.

03. Using the Favorites list on Mobile Internet Explorer


For easy browsing in the future, you can add websites to your Favorites. You may do so with this few steps:

  1. Go to the webpage you want to add and then press Menu and select Add to Favorites
  2. If you like, you can change the name for the favorite link to have it sound more relevant to you
  3. Using the Folder field, you may select a category you want to save the favorite link in (you can also create new categories)
  4. Press Add to add the website to your Favorite

04. Instant Messaging


If you’re obsessed with instant messaging using either AOL, Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger, you may continue with your obsession on the Samsung Jack. The only prerequisite is to have an already active accout registered.

To start using the service:

  1. On the Home Screen, go to Start > More > IM & Email
  2. Select IM and follow the on-screen instructions

05. Office Mobile


Distinctively Microsoft is its Office suite, the main building blocks, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and the latest OneNote are all available on your WM device. After downloading the files to your device, you can easily access them. Here is an example of using it.

To access Office Mobile, you can simply go to Start > More >Applications > More > Office Mobile

06. Taking Photos with the Built-in Camera


Note: Before taking  a picture, you will need to have at least 4MB of memory left since the largest image size possible is 4MB.

To take a picture, simply press the Camera button to initiate the application. The photo taken is then saved to the location specified in the Default Storage option. After saving the photo, the camera will then automatically return to the Photo Preview mode.

07. File Explorer


The File Explorer allows you to open an explorer similar to that of Windows Explorer on the desktop. This application allows you to navigate through your phone to locate files and folders. It is one of the most frequently used application, and one we will recommend for you to make a shortcut for.

08. Mobile Banking


You may access your banking information on your device by performing actions such as viewing of balances and account history, perform transfers,and paying bills directly from your mobile device.

Participating banks includes the following: Citi, Chase, Wachovia, SunTrust, USAA, Regions, Arvest, Synovus, America First, BancorpSouth, Bank Caroline, 1st Bank, Carolina First, and Mercantile Bank.

09. MobiTV


MobiTV is a subscription service that allows you to watch your favorite TV shows uisng your handset.

Note: AFter 7 days trial, you will need to pay $10 for subscription to keep using MobiTV.

10. RSS Reader


Are you using Google Reader or Blogline to keep track of the RSS? You may now use the pre-installed RSS reader on your mobile device to keep track of the latest news, headlines and more.

11. Speed Dial


Just like setting up shortcuts, speed dial is a way to assign a number to a contact or application for quick access.

You may easily edit the Speed Dial:

  1. On the Home Screen, select Start > More > Applications > More > Speed Dial
  2. Press Menu and select Run or Go
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add, remove or change a speed dial entry

12. Internet Sharing


Have internet on your phone but not on your PC? You can now use the powerful Internet Sharing application to get internet access on your PC from your phone. Here’s how:

  1. On the Home screen, select Start > More > More > Internet Sharing and press the key.
  2. The Internet Sharing connection screen will display.
  3. In the PC Connection field, use the Navigation key to select either USB or Bluetooth PAN.
  4. Press the Connect soft key.
  5. The Status field with change to Connected after a connection is made.
  6. If using the USB setting, unplug the cable to your PC.

Your PC will now be using your phone to receive internet.

Note: This feature is also known as Tethering. While, it does seem to be a good way to browse the internet on your PC without local connectivity, AT&T does provide “Tethering Service” for $30/5G. So at some point, if used excessively, you might get charged by AT&T. We do recommend that this feature be use cautiously in appropriate time intervals.

Phew! That was a lot to go through in one lesson. But they are some of the most commonly used feature that are also differentiating on the WM devices. You can now set your own alarms, watch TV, read up the latest news, and even write an essay right on your mobile device. Lovely.

13. Practice!


Now it’s time to put what you have learn to the test with today’s practices. Give these a try:

  • Transfer a Word or Excel document to your mobile device and access it there.
  • If you uses an instant messaging service and have either Wi-Fi or data plan, try to setup your instant messaging account and chat away.
  • Set up recurring alarm for your upcoming work or school week.

I have an unlocked Jack on Tmobile service.
I cannot see a “speed dial” option when I go through Contacts.
Furthermore, I am unable to send picture texts.

Would you happen to know a fix? Much thanks.
