[Beginner] CareAce Class 03: Using your Phone
Following some basic introduction to the use of buttons, symbols and sychronization, we can now march to actually using the device. What can be taught about using a phone, you may ask. Good question! Since the smartphones are packed with exciting functions and features, your phone is not just a phone, and using your phone is, well, not just using a phone.
In today’s lesson, we will cover 3 parts of using your phone.
- Turning the Phone Function On/Off
- Using Speed Dial
- Using Voice Command
Let’s get started!
01. Turning the Phone Function On/Off
Smartphones can be configured to turn off phone function where the antenna is basically shut off disallowing calls from coming in or going out. This can be easily done by pressing the power button, and in the Wireless Manager choose Phone and set it to be turned off (screenshot of symbol) or turned on.
02. Using Speed Dial
There are 3 ways to make a call, through contacts, search call history and speed dial. We’re going to take a look at how you can set up and use speed dial.
You can easily use speed dial by assigning a contact to a number. Here are the steps:
- On the Home Screen, select Start > More > Applications > More > Speed Dial
- Press Menu and select Run or Go
- You are now ready to change, add or delete an entry by following the on-screen instructions
To use the assigned speed dial simply long press the number. A good example is the default voice-mail which is preinstalled to most mobile devices. You can try it out by long press the number 1, you will then dial out to your voicemail with numbers depending on your carrier.

03. Using Voice Command
A. Voice command is one of the futuristic feature on the smartphone. Without looking at the screen, you can have the device perform pre-defined actions. You may check out the demo here (video).
Here are the steps to configure settings for voice command:
- On the Home Screen go to Start > More > More and Select Voice Command
- Select the Voice Enabled field to enable/disable the Voice Command feature. Set it to Yes to enable Voice Command.
- Select the other fields that you want to enable Voice Command on and move the Navigation key Left or Right to make your selection. Choose from the following:
- Availability
- Announcement Routing
- Announcements
- Call Confirmations
- Dial Confirmations
- Announce Calls
- Announce Messaging
- Calendar Reminders
- Media Selections
B.After you’re done with configuring the Voice Command, now you can start using it! Here are some instruction on how to use the application:
- Press and hold the AT&T key (screenshot) to activate Voice Command. A microphone icon (screenshot) will be shown on the title bar.
- After the phone beeps, say the name of the command you want to perform. The Voice Commands are:
- Call: Lets you dial a Contacts entry by saying a name saved in your contact list.
- Dial: Lets you dial a phone number by saying the digits in the telephone number.
- Lookup: Lets you retrieve contact information for any entry in your contacts list.
- Open: This provides you with one-step access to some or all of the following applications, depending on their voice enabled settings:
- Calendar
- Contacts
- Media
- Messaging
- Phone
- Start Menu
- Status

04. Practice!
As complicated as it looks, these features and functionality are here to help you. It may seem a little complex to begin, but once you have tried it, you may embrace it for your daily use. To get you familiar with these functions, let’s start practicing them!
- Add an contact to your speed dial in number 3
- Try to set up at least one voice command with any function you pick
- Try to turn off your phone (with the device still on)
