I love Evernote’s slogan “Remember Everything.” In the information overloading era, remembering everything has became an increasing challenge for many, Evernote seek to aid those who are in need (and has a mobile device plus a desktop at their disposal).

Evernote has opened their popular ‘cloud and desktop memory-capturing service’ to the general public for an year.  It’s still in public beta phase(ver 3.3), where users can sign up for free or premium subscriptions.  Evernote is an easy to use service that allows you to create and manage ‘notes’ in your ‘notebooks’ stored on EN’s (Evernote) server.  You can sync your notes seamlessly from a mobile phone, PC, or a Mac.

Evernote allows users to capture information in any environment using virtually any device or platform, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere. The product’s innovative recognition and synchronization technology allows users to capture their memories as text, snapshots, digital ink or audio and then easily find and share them. Printed and handwritten text within images is made fully searchable and all notes are automatically synchronized between the network and local devices.
The mobile client allows you to create text notes on the fly (press 1 from the main menu) and then upload them to the EN server (press 2).  This is very handy if you want to remember something for later, perhaps items to pick up at the store or errands to run.  One gripe I have is that you can’t add tags, titles, or select which notebook to store your text notes in from the mobile EN client unless you open the Search (press 3) and select Quick Note at the bottom of the page (alternatively, press 0).  Finally, you can search for keywords from the mobile client and you’ll get a list of results.
A nice feature about the PC client is that it saves the progress as you are typing a note.  Imagine my surprise when my computer crashed and everything I had typed previously was intact when I loaded the client again.  I can see the usefulness of this program if you have an important paper or report to write and don’t want to lose any progress due to unforeseen circumstances (computer crash, power outage, etc.), just type it in Evernote and copy/paste it into a proper word processor when finished.

The browser-based client is similar to the PC client.  I find that functions such as modifying tags, creating new notebooks, etc. are easier to access in the PC client.  You can also install the Universal Clipper add-on and extensions for Firefox and Internet Explorer which makes copying items to Evernote easier.

If you use this service daily, you may run out of upload allowance for the free subscription quite fast; however, the premium subscription is not a huge burden on the wallet, costing only $5 a month or $45 a year if paid at once, and you get more than 10 times the upload allowance of the free subscription.

Target Audience: Evernote has evolved to become one of the leading syncable note-taking software with its goal to bridge the gap between your mobile device and your desktop. If you’re like me who takes random notes and enjoy accessing to them on my desktop without much hassel, then I believe you are ready for EverNote.

Yes, you can. Evernote is a cloud service… think of it like Google Docs. :)
